HOT ELEPHANT CHILI SAUCE, 150g

On safari in Western Uganda, you may enjoy watching elephants grazing in the savanna or gathering at water holes. Maybe you even spot the elusive forest elephants. We all love these gentle giants, don’t we? Yet elephants can be difficult neighbours. Eating around 200 kg of food daily, they roam far and wide to find it. If they cross into a farmers’ field, they can destroy a family’s harvest in minutes. Luckily, chili peppers’ hot taste and smell drives them away. Farmers thus often plant chili around their fields to protect their crops – and the elephants. Our Hot Elephant Chili Sauce honours the world’s largest land mammal: the African Elephant, Loxodonta africana or Enjojo.

Ingredients: African bird-eye chilies*, tomatoes*, garlic*, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice*, sugar, salt, starch, spices

*sustainably produced from farmer groups in Western Uganda.

PASSIONATE CRANE PASSIONFRUIT-PINEAPPLE JAM, 200g

This unique blend of pineapple and passion fruit offers an unforgettable taste of the Ugandan tropics. You’ll often see these ingredients growing in gardens while travelling in the country.

Our Passionate Crane jam is also named after the crested crane. That’s not only because we think crested cranes and pineapples must have the same hairdresser! More seriously, we want to highlight the national symbol of Uganda. This iconic bird appears on the country’s flag and the coat of arms. Its feathers carry all the national colours (black, yellow, and red) and like the Ugandan people, it is friendly, gentle, and peaceful.

Fun facts: The birds pair for life, can live up to 22 years, and boast a wingspan of two metres.

Ingredients: Pineapple*, sugar, passion fruit*, lemon juice*, pectin

*sustainably produced from farmer groups in Western Uganda.

SWEET PANGOLIN PINEAPPLE JAM, 200g

Pineapples and pangolins: They’re both sweet and share the same scaly dress. Surely, you enjoy pineapples while indulging in Uganda’s beauty. But have you tried our homemade pineapple jam? If not, now’s the time!

The pangolin story though is rather sad then sweet. All eight species, four of which call Uganda home, are among the world’s most trafficked mammals, and are near extinction. When protecting themselves from natural predators, they curl up in a ball inside their long tail - which contains up to 47 vertebrae, a world record among mammals! Our backbone has only 32 to 34.

The tragic truth is that we may lose pangolins before we even get to know them. We therefore dedicate our sweetness to the pangolins.

Ingredients: Pineapple*, sugar, lemon juice*, pectin

*sustainably produced from farmer groups in Western Uganda.

CHUNKY MONKEY BANANA JAM, 200g

Bananas are everywhere in the west of Uganda, with more than 70 species known to date. Ugandans cultivate some of the edible varieties - mostly matoke (plantains), and yellow and little bananas - in their gardens. No need to say that monkeys fancy bananas, too. Uganda is home to several species, and all are protected. But sometimes they are a nuisance to farmers, as they like to eat the ripe crops, especially maize. Hence, people guard their fields around the clock, noisily chasing away any monkey they see.

Our Chunky Monkey jam is homemade with yellow bananas grown by small scale farmers in western Uganda. We hope, you do not need to share it with a monkey but spoon it out just yourself.

Ingredients: Bananas*, sugar, lemon juice*, starch, pectin

*sustainably produced from farmer groups in Western Uganda.
